Rackets.ie has been operating since the early 2000’s and was set up as the online face of ‘MARTYN EVANS SPORTS’ – based in Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Ranelagh (Dublin).
Here is our background story, which outlines the genesis of the operation and, we believe, explains our success to date.
Founded by Martyn in the early 1980’s, we grew from a part-time, one-man restringing business to be Irelands leading racket-sports specialist outlet. The origin of the business was during Martyn’s playing days as one of Irelands top ranked badminton players when he started doing some restringing for the other players on the circuit. After retiring from competitive badminton he took up squash and subsequently earned several international caps at veterans level. Not a complete stranger to the tennis courts either, he made use of his many contacts and high profile in racket sports to take over the concession in Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club and the rest, as they say, is history!
Martyn’s broad knowledge of all racket sports was a key factor in the early success of the business, not to mention his determination to give the best possible service – at the best price! It was his belief that it is imperative to know the sports intimately in order to be able to satisfy the customers needs and this was carried through in his staffing policy when the need for more help arose. All the staff, both full and part-time, came from a rackets background, and usually played at least one of the sports to a high competitive level.
Initially, the customers were predominantly locally based, but as time passed and word spread throughout the rackets fraternity, the customer base also spread, to the point that we had many regular customers across the country. For many years now, we have been widely acknowledged as having the largest range of rackets and shoes available as well as providing objective and impartial advice on all aspects of equipment purchases and restringing.
The business was constantly evolving and expanding our offering. We started out with the trade-in option – to this day we are still one of the very few outlets where you can trade in your old racket against another (either new or second-hand). We have continued this trend, adding ‘buy and try’ options for racket purchases and more recently in customisation/matching/weighting of racket frames and expanding the range to cater for the ever-growing Padel-playing community.
Martyn sold his interest in the business in Feb 2020, since which time we have been using the Rackets.ie name not only online, but also in our shop. Even though he is no longer a part of the operation, our core ethos remains the same as it was when he started out:
We are dedicated to providing a fully professional service to all our customers. We guarantee that we sell only genuine quality products from reputable manufacturers/suppliers – and bear in mind that there are huge numbers of fake/counterfeit items out there (especially online!). We will always be extremely competitive on price – and we are confident that we will not be beaten for our combination of expertise/advice/range/options/value.
